If we naively follow our own tradition we may some day find that we have made a mistake by not questioning our traditions - Tai Chi Classic

Know what you are going to do when the market does what it is going to do - 100 year old traders axiom

Every now and then the impossible can and will happen - 100 year old traders axiom

What can I win and what can I lose? What are the probabilities of either happening?

Affirmations and related self-talk can evoke strong positive memories and corresponding increases in alertness and arousal. Remember Muhammed Ali's strapline? "I am the greatest!". A lot of people ended up believing it. The most important was Ali himself. Anxiety into energy. The 'physiological adaptation' prepares you to fight or run better. If it hadn't worked, your ancestors would be something's lunch.

Who tries hard - or even at all - if they expect to fail? And how much harder does someone work when they believe there's a real chance of success? Setbacks matter less if you are confident that you can overcome them. 'Nerves' matter less if you believe you will win out. Better motivation, better response to setbacks, and lower response to nerves add up to a winning combination. Maybe that's why confident people always seem to achieve more? Someone who focuses on the possibility of failure may not try - and if you don't try, you can't really expect much chance of success. But the same situation holds the possibility of success. There's an important lesson in there; maybe the way you look at a situation can change your feelings about it. And feelings can change behavior, which can change performance. "Positive thinking" is, in part, a way of restoring the balanced view you should have, and in part, to do with choosing behavior that gets you improving, instead of giving up. Behave like a champion. None of it means you have to change your personality. All you change is what you do. It's easier, and it gets results. However wobbly you feel, you COULD run faster or fight harder - as long as you don't hang around worrying about it. But it's your call; run - or fight?

Positive Self-Image -> Positive Attitude -> Positive Expectations -> Improved Behavior -> Improved Performance (Repeat)

Imagery is more effective if it involves more than just one sense. For effective mental rehearsal, add more sensory inputs to the image. Example: For a vivid recollection of a great performance, recall not only the visual aspects, but the quality of the light, feel of the breeze, smell of the grass (or the beer tent), the sound of arrows leaving the bow and the 'thump' as they strike the gold.

Deliberately turn your mind to a time when you did well, and dwell on it. Very effective, as it combines thought with action. Just focus on what you're doing; check the feel of the market, carefully examine your internals for problems; on the line, focus on the feel, rhythm or balance in your trading.

It has to be known, “What is the market giving me before I get in the trade?” Most traders don’t do that. They do the opposite. They have the sequence backward. They look for a spot to get in, and then they hope the market is on their side.

 Tick

The NYSE Tick can be used as a short-term indicator while day trading. Although it represents the number of stocks ticking up minus the number of stocks ticking down on the NYSE, it can be used as a barometer for stocks trading on all US Exchanges. For example, if the Tick reads +200, then 200 more stocks on the NYSE are ticking up then are ticking down. This is obviously a bullish signal. If the Tick should read -354, then we understand that 354 more stocks are ticking down then are ticking up. This is a bearish signal. In addition to the actual "number" reading of the Tick, one should also pay attention to how the Tick is trading in relation to it's support and resistance. Be sure to watch it on a 5 or 15 minute chart in realtime. When the Tick remains positive on the day bullish momentum can continue. When the Tick remains negative, bearish momentum can continue. However, if the Tick should rise over +1000, the market will likely soon reverse because it has become over bought. The reverse is also true. If the Tick should fall below -1000, the market will likely reverse because it has become very oversold. If you happen to be long when the Tick begins to rise over +1000 or short when the Tick begins to fall below -1000, you need to begin to lighten up on your positions or close them entirely in anticipation of a reversal. To be extremely careful while trading, only enter longs when the Tick is above zero and shorts when the Tick is below zero.

On 3-3-9 the daily tick peaked at -576
On 6-8-7/10-12-7 the weekly tick peaked at 1123/1110
On 1-2-9/4-3-9 the weekly tick peaked at 1126/1125

4<8<20 on the emas which is "Market In Correction"
4<20<8 Attempted correction
4>8<20 we will change to "Correction Under Pressure"
4>20>8 we would have an "Attempted Rally.
4>8>20 A "Confirmed Rally"
At that point, if we then went 4<8>20 we would go to "Rally Under Pressure"...There are some other combos which are unlikely but could happen. It also depends on where we are coming from as to what a call might be.

  • Has a turnaround sold off unprofitable divisions?
  • Invest as much time and effort in buying a new stock as you would in choosing a new refrigerator.
  • When in doubt, check back later.

While the best plan for stop placement works a majority of the time - none work all the time.

There were times when I just wanted pull the two hairs I have remaining out of frustration and then I realized that the first stop is the really most important. A trade either goes my way or it doesn't.

After the first stop passes muster (trade entered and NOT stopped out) I use the daily ATR or something else of a smaller or larger value after my risk has been met. In other words the initial stop does NOT get moved until I am ITM.

Day trades - 5-15 minute usually Swing trades - daily ATR above/below the strongest hourly swing - I count 3 successful hourly swings and THEN move my stop Position trades - what is a position? I can't remember ... but when I get to position trading again - I will use the swing low until the next swing low is created.

When the trade starts to go toward the stop - and I am nicely ITM, I sometimes pull the stop or if just a little profit - change it to a limit order to close the trade out. It depends a lot on the position size at the time as I always try to add to winning positions.

I may actually use 2 or more stops. (I use LIFO accounting so the most profitable trades stay running longer)

I almost always pull my stops for the first 30 minutes of a session - there are exceptions but that is where I found I ran into the most trouble.

I don't use trailing stops unless I have to be away.

Three new Web tools give you a quick look at where you stand on the road to retirement. With Fidelity's myPlan Snapshot (www.fidelity.com), all you do is provide five facts: your age, salary, monthly savings, how much you've saved so far and your investment style (conservative versus aggressive). You'll see how large a nest egg you can accumulate given your current strategy, or you can adjust the variables to see how much more you could stockpile. Fidelity's more detailed myPlan Retirement Quick Check takes about 30 minutes to complete.

Want to know how you stack up against your peers? Try Nationwide's RetirAbility? Check (www.nationwide.com). The tool grades your progress thus far with an "R-score" and gives advice on how to improve your score.

The Pudding Index (www.puddingindex.com), as in "the proof is in the pudding," creates a benchmark by comparing your current savings with those of someone of similar age and salary level, and then projects how much retirement income your savings could replace at age 65.

Stop Orders

  • Bye at price or higher
  • Sell at price

A stop order is an order designed to trigger a trade when a stock's price rises or falls to a particular point.

 •	Buy Stop Orders - The stop price is set above the current ASK price
 •	Sell Stop Orders - The stop price is set below the current BID price

A stop order automatically converts to a market order when the market reaches the stop price.

 •	Depending on market conditions, once the order is triggered, there
is no guarantee of the execution price and the price received may be
several points away from the stop price.

For Nasdaq stocks:

 •	A stop order becomes a market order if the stock is quoted at the stop price

For Listed stocks (NYSE, AMEX):

 •	The customer is entitled to the next sale on the primary market when
the stock trades at the stop price, as long as there are enough shares
        available at that price.

Stop orders are handled differently by the exchanges. They are considered "not held" orders. Priority is not given to these orders and the order may not be executed, even if the stock is trading at the specified price.

Stops should be based on the stock's standard deviation - Michael Sincere

Limit Orders

Limit to buy or sell at price when reached

  • Buy at or lower
  • Sell at or higher

Stop Limit

  • Buy or sell at price or better after stop is triggered (useful for buying surges?)

Stock raises to stop and triggers.
Stock raises above limit.
Stock falls to limit and triggers the buy.
