Battery Chargers

Nicad

12 V NiCd? batteries are made up of 10 cells connected in series.

http://www.powerstream.com/NiCd.htm

NiCd? and NiMH? cells are rated at 1.2V for design purposes although they normally develop about 1.25V. Under full charge they require about 1.5V to 1.6V. They can supply very large amounts of current and display a remarkably flat discharge characteristic, maintaining a consistent 1.2V throughout discharge.

LM317 data sheet

The minimum voltage you need to get a full charge varies with temperature--at least 1.41 volts per cell at 20 degrees C. 1.41 * 4 = 5.64
